Six Maintenance Items to Tackle This Spring Want to stay safe on the road this spring? You’ll want to make sure your car is well maintained. Are you too busy to have your car serviced at regular intervals? You could be putting yourself at risk if is not regularly maintained, according to the Car Care Council. First of all, you should be following the service schedule listed in your car’s operating manual. Regular maintenance is critical. In addition to the regular oil change, here are some additional areas to have checked this spring: 1. Timing belts. There are no telltale signs that the timing belt is worn until it breaks, unfortunately, so it is wise to replace it at the intervals suggested in your owner’s manual. 2. Belts and hoses. These need to be replaced at regular service intervals, or when they become cracked or worn. When they are worn, it is easily visible, so you can check yourself, or have your mechanic do this. 3. Temperature gauges. Have your car’s thermostat checked to make sure it still opens and closes at the right temperatures. Also, have the coolant/antifreeze replaced every two years. 4. Air and fuel filters. If they become clogged, it can lead to expensive repairs. Besides, a clean air and fuel filter will increase your fuel economy and performance. 5. Brakes. You should have the brake system professionally flushed every two years. 6. Automatic transmission fluid. The fluid is relatively inexpensive and can save costly transmission repairs in the long run. Even if your transmission is "sealed for life," it should still get a fluid change every 30,000 miles, according to the Car Care Council.
